The public prosecutor said Seetalvad, Sreekumar and Sanjeev Bhatt had made use of Jafri’s grief to espouse their own political agendas at the behest of Congress leaders.
The Gujarat government opposed the bail plea of rights activist Teesta Setalvad and former director general of police RB Sreekumar on Wednesday, alleging that the accused had used former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri’s wife, Zakia Jafri, to file a false complaint against the then CM Narendra Modi and other political leaders of Gujarat.

The public prosecutor said Seetalvad, Sreekumar and Sanjeev Bhatt had made use of Jafri’s grief to espouse their own political agendas at the behest of Congress leaders.

Setalvad, who was arrested from her residence in Mumbai on June 26 along with Sreekumar, was summoned to the Ahmedabad Crime Branch for questioning. She had earlier denied the charges levelled against her.

They were arrested after a first information report was filed against them by Ahmedabad Crime Branch inspector DB Barad following the SC judgement that gave a clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2002 riot cases as alleged by Jafri, wife of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who was killed by a mob in Gulbarg Society massacre in February 2002.

The SIT probing charges of “fabrication of evidence” and “conspiracy” pertaining to post-2002 Gujarat riot activities had earlier filed an affidavit opposing the bail plea.
