Rajpipla: A sessions court here on Tuesday sentenced Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Chaitar Vasava and eight others including his wife to seven-year imprisonment in a November 2023 case involving assault of forest officials and extortion.

Additional Sessions Judge A V Hirpara convicted Vasava, his wife Shakuntala Vasava and others in connection with the incident that had occurred on the night of October 30, 2023.

According to the prosecution, forest officials removed crop grown illegally on government land in the area, leading to a dispute. They were called to Vasava's residence in Dediapada town, and during the heated discussion Chaitar Vasava and others threatened the officials. Vasava also fired a round in the air.

The tribal leader who represents Dediapada (ST) assembly constituency and the co-accused were booked in November 2023 under Indian Police Code (IPC) sections related to rioting, extortion and attack on government officials as well as under the provisions of the Arms Act.
