The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan on Thursday across the Delhi-NCR as air quality continues to remain in the “poor” category.

Under GRAP Stage 1, authorities have rolled out a series of measures focused on controlling pollution at the source.

Strict dust control norms have been enforced at construction and demolition sites, with private projects of 500 square metres or more barred from operating without approved dust mitigation plans.

Open burning of waste, including garbage, biomass and municipal solid waste, has been prohibited, while roadside eateries and commercial kitchens are not allowed to use coal or firewood.

The use of diesel generators has been restricted to essential and emergency services.

Traffic-related interventions have also been intensified, including deployment of personnel at congestion points and advisories for motorists to switch off engines at red lights.

Under the guidelines, authorities have been directed to take action against visibly polluting vehicles, including impounding and imposing penalties.

In addition, strict action has been mandated against polluting industries and thermal power plants operating within a 300-kilometre radius of Delhi to prevent further deterioration in air quality.
