Two doctors die as GPS rerouted car in Kerala to a waterlogged road, which was a river

A late-night drive took a devastating turn for Dr. Advaith and Dr. Ajmal Asif, both 29 years old, when their car, a Honda Civic, met with a tragic accident in Gothuruth, Kerala's Ernakulam district. As per a TOI report, the incident occurred at 12:30 am on a Sunday, amidst heavy rain and an unfamiliar route.

The doctors were returning after celebrating Dr. Advaith's 29th birthday in Kochi, where they had gone for some birthday shopping. Sadly, their celebration ended in a heartbreaking tragedy as the GPS misguided them to a waterlogged stretch, which was, in fact, a river, leading the car to sink.

Three other passengers in the car miraculously managed to escape and were subsequently rescued. Dr. Gaziq Thabseer, one of the survivors, shared that the accident occurred after they relied on GPS for navigation. However, he couldn't confirm whether it was a technical glitch in the application or human error that led them astray.


During the monsoon season, GPS algorithms tend to guide drivers to less congested routes. However, experts caution that quieter roads may not always be the safest option. Additionally, they emphasize the importance of selecting the correct mode of travel on the map, as different vehicles have distinct travel requirements.

Dr. Ajmal hailed from Thrissur district, while Dr. Advaith was from Kollam. Of the three survivors, Jismon and Tamanna, along with Dr. Thabseer, who works in the cardiology department of CRAFT Hospital, have been admitted to a hospital in Kochi for medical attention. Meanwhile, Dr. Advaith's body was transferred to Kalamassery Medical College, and Dr. Ajmal's body was taken to Thrissur Medical College for autopsy.

This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of vigilance and caution when relying on GPS navigation, especially during adverse weather conditions.
