Guwahati: IPS officer Gyanendra Pratap Singh will take charge as new Director General of police of Assam on February 1.

Niraj Verma, Principal Secretary to the Government of Assam, Home& Political Department stated, “In the interest of public service Gyanendra Pratap Singh. IPS (RR-1991). Special Director General of Police (Law & Order), Assam and I/c Special Director General of Police (Border), Assam is promoted and posted as Director General of Police. Assam in the Apex Scale of pay in Level 17 of Pay Matrix with effect from 01.02.2023 on superannuation of Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, IPS (RR-1988) on 31.1.2023.”

He was earlier posted in New Delhi as inspector general of police at the National Investigation Agency. Singh, a 1991-batch IPS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre was repatriated to his parent cadre at the request of the Assam government. He came to Assam at the height of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) movement in 2019. He was also a part of the Special Protection Group (SPG) earlier.


In a tweet Singh stated, “With the blessings of Maa Kamakhya, I look forward to the opportunity of serving the people of Assam. Gratitude to the Honourable Chief minister Assam for reposing trust in me to lead the glorious Assam Police.
