Najafgarh tops the list with 11,653 senior citizens receiving pensions, followed by Uttam Nagar (11,198), Bawana (10,426), Rithala (10,305) and Narela (10,259). In contrast, New Delhi has just 1,164 beneficiaries, with Delhi Cantt (1,937) and R K Puram (2,036) also at the lower end.
Nine constituencies, including Mundka, Mustafabad and Gokalpur, have more than 9,000 beneficiaries, mostly informal and migrant laborers with weaker family safety nets.
The pension, provided under the Delhi Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, offers Rs 2,000 per month to those aged 60–69 and Rs 2,500 for seniors 70 and above, with a family income cap of Rs 1 lakh.
"The distribution of the beneficiaries shows the social security map of the capital. Areas with high numbers of such beneficiaries show that thousands of people who spent their careers in the informal economy are now ageing without a financial cushion, apart from this meagre financial support from Delhi govt," said an official to TOI.
The Delhi government cleared pending payments on Feb 4 after months of delays due to administrative and technical issues. Social Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj said the department has been directed to make the payment system “more transparent, smooth and accountable,” ensuring a dignified life for senior citizens.
Social Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj said, "Ensuring all eligible beneficiaries receive their rightful entitlement on time is govt's responsibility. I have directed the social welfare department to make the payment system more transparent, smooth and accountable. Delhi govt is continuously working to ensure a dignified life for senior citizens."
An official added that the government is likely to begin an evaluation of existing beneficiaries this month, during which they will be verified. "The groundwork for the launch of the verification has already been completed. Its purpose is to weed out ineligible beneficiaries as well as plug gaps in targeting and delivery," the official said.
Officials also said a beneficiary verification drive will begin this month to weed out ineligible recipients and improve targeting, assessing the scheme’s impact on income security and essential needs like food, medicines, and utilities. Over 70,000 people have applied for the pension in recent years, though a detailed year-wise breakdown isn’t available.
