In a move to address the rising incidents of deaths caused by aggressive dog attacks, the Central government has asked the state for a ban on the import, breeding, and sale of certain 'ferocious' dog breeds. The breeds include Rottweiler, Pitbull, Terrier, Wolf dogs, and Mastiffs, which are deemed to be dangerous for human life. The ban will also cover mixed and crossbreeds of these breeds. This decision comes after a committee of experts and animal welfare bodies submitted a report in response to an order by the Delhi High Court, a TOI report stated.

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying has sent a letter to all states, urging the local bodies to refrain from issuing licenses or permits for the sale and breeding of these dogs. They have also emphasized the need for sterilizing dogs of these breeds that are already kept as pets, to prevent further breeding.

The breeds identified for the ban, including mixed and crossbreeds, are

➤Pitbull Terrier
➤Tosa Inu
➤American Staffordshire Terrier
➤Fila Brasileiro

The letter also highlights the concerns raised by citizens and animal welfare organizations, along with the Delhi High Court's order to ban certain dog breeds as pets. The court had directed the Union of India to decide on the matter after consulting all stakeholders, preferably within three months.

In addition, the government has urged states to ensure the implementation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (dog breeding and marketing) Rules 2017 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (Pet Shop) Rules 2018 by the local bodies and state animal welfare boards.

The government's decision aims to safeguard human life and prevent further incidents of dog attacks. It is a step towards promoting responsible pet ownership and ensuring the welfare of both humans and animals. Local bodies are expected to issue necessary guidelines for the implementation of the ban.
