The government will discuss with the representatives of political parties in Parliament on whether the discretionary quota of 10 seats a year that MPs have for admission to central schools be done away with or enhanced.

Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan made the proposal after the Lok Sabha speaker suggested him to hold wider discussions on the matter, after Congress member Manish Tewari raised it in the lower house on Monday.

Tewari said given the fact an MP represents lakhs of people in the Lok Sabha constituency, the current quota of 10 seats for admission was proving to be very inadequate compared with the large number of admission seekers. Therefore, he said, the quota should be either scrapped or enhanced.

Pradhan said if the House was unanimous on scrapping the quota, the government could work in that direction. "We are people's representatives. We are not representatives of a few," Pradhan said. Many MPs were heard opposing ending the quota.
