Government slashes LPG prices, provides relief ahead of festive season; here's a list of the city-wise prices
The Union Cabinet in India has announced a reduction in the prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) ahead of the festive season. All domestic consumers of LPG cylinders will receive a subsidy of Rs 200 per cylinder, with additional benefits for us...

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur revealed during a Cabinet briefing on August 29, "All domestic consumers of LPG cylinders will receive a Rs 200 subsidy per cylinder. Additionally, users under the PM Ujjwala scheme will benefit from this subsidy on top of the existing one." Minister Thakur also stated that this extra LPG cylinder subsidy would be implemented immediately, offering it as a special gift for Raksha Bandhan and Onam celebrations.
This move now brings the subsidy for Ujjwala beneficiaries to a total of Rs 400 per LPG cylinder.
Currently, in the national capital, a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder costs ₹1,103, more than double the rate it had in May 2020. However, effective Wednesday, the cost will be reduced to ₹903. For Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries, the price will further decrease to ₹703 after taking into account the ongoing ₹200 per cylinder subsidy.
Furthermore, the government has also announced an additional 75 lakh Ujjwala connections, which will bring the total number of Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries to 10.35 crores. It's important to note that while Ujjwala beneficiaries number 9.6 crores, there are around 31 crores domestic cooking gas users across the country.
Minister Anurag Thakur, while sharing these decisions after the cabinet meeting, stated that the reduction in cooking gas prices is a gift from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the women of the country on the occasions of Onam and Rakshabandhan.
Thakur added, "The financial implication of an additional subsidy of Rs 200 per LPG cylinder will be Rs 7,680 crore for the fiscal year 2023-24."
Prime Minister Modi took to Twitter to express his thoughts on the matter, saying, "The festival of Raksha Bandhan is a day to increase happiness in our family. The reduction in gas prices will increase the comfort of the sisters in my family and make their lives easier. May every sister of mine be happy, be healthy, this is my wish to God."
This is a list of the major cities and LPG prices effective from today (Rs/14.2 kg cylinder).
- New Delhi: 903
- Mumbai: 902.5
- Kolkata: 929
- Chennai: 908.5
- Bengaluru: 905.5
- Ahmedabad: 910
- Hyderabad: 955
- Patna: 1,001
- Bhopal: 908.5
- Jaipur: 906.5
- Lucknow: 940.5
It's worth noting that assembly elections are scheduled to be held in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Mizoram later this year. The decision comes amidst a backdrop of consumer prices rising by 7.4 percent in July, surpassing expectations of a 6.5 percent increase, driven primarily by overall food inflation.
It is important to highlight that India currently depends on imports for 60 percent of its natural gas requirements.
To address pending Ujjwala applications and provide deposit-free LPG connections to all eligible households, the government will soon commence the distribution of PMUY connections to 75 lakh women from economically disadvantaged households. This initiative will significantly increase the total number of beneficiaries under the PMUY scheme to 10.35 crores.
