The government is reviewing India’s performance on 26 global indices through inter-ministerial coordination to identify gaps and address them, thereby supporting country's growth, minister of state for statistics and programme implementation Rao Inderjit Singh informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

This effort, known as the Global Indices for Reforms and Growth (GIRG) initiative, tracks India’s progress on 26 select global indices through inter-ministerial coordination for driving reforms and growth in the country, Singh noted. “These 26 key Global Indices are published by 16 international agencies, spanning four broad themes: economy, development, governance, and industry.”

The Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) of NITI Aayog serves as the knowledge partner and central coordinator for this initiative.

As reported by ET in April, the government is studying global indices that rank India on various parameters such as hunger, democracy, and telecommunications.

Among the indices under review are the Democracy Index, the Network Readiness Index (NRI), the Global Hunger Index (GHI), and the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI).

Under the GIRG framework, 17 nodal ministries have been assigned specific indices and given responsibility for driving improvements.

“These nodal ministries are required to conduct a thorough review of the index methodologies and proactively engage with the respective publishing agencies/ international bodies and the concerned line ministries to ensure that the most recent official Indian data sources are utilized in the computation of these indices,” said Singh.

He added that the nodal/line ministries are also required to identify performance gaps and implement corrective measures and policy reforms to address underlying issues, thereby helping strengthen India's standing on the global stage.
