Garg, a 1991-batch Indian Administrative Service (retired) officer of the Odisha cadre, will continue to serve on a contract basis beyond the expiry of his current term later this month. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension "for a further period of one year beyond July 31, 2026, i.e., up to July 31, 2027," the order dated July 13 said.
In addition to heading the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Garg will continue to discharge the functions of secretary to the National Statistical Commission.

Garg was appointed Secretary in the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on May 30, 2024, after serving as Secretary in the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment.
At the time of his appointment, the government had said he would hold the post "till the date of his superannuation, i.e. 31.07.2024 and thereafter on a contract basis for a period of one year beyond the date of superannuation or until further orders".
Following his retirement, the government granted him a one-year extension in 2024, which was due to conclude this month. The latest decision extends his tenure by another year.
