Fuel prices across metros effective from today after cut in Excise duty

The Centre cut excise duty on petrol and diesel by a record Rs 5 and Rs 10, respectively, per litre on Wednesday after drawing criticism over the last many months amid highly inflated fuel prices. This move has brought rates down from their highest-ever levels.

The Centre also urged states to reduce the value-added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel to give relief to consumers, a government statement said. Multiple states have heeded the Centre's call and reduced VAT attached to fuel rates in their respective territories, reducing petrol and diesel prices.

The reduction varies state to state in accordance with the level of VAT levied, where states with higher VAT will see slightly higher reduction in pump prices.

UP, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Assam, Manipur, Tripura and Sikkim cut VAT on fuel after the Centre's call. The BJP governs all these states, with UP, Goa, Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Manipur going to polls next year.

The steepest excise duty cut will reduce the opposition’s leverage against BJP over the issue of fuel taxes and price rise. It will, however, leave a hole of about Rs 60,000-65,000 crore in the tax collection in the remaining months of this fiscal.

Assam
The Assam government announced a reduction in VAT on petrol and diesel by Rs 7 per litre. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier said that the state was ready to cut its share of taxes on fuel if the high rates continue for a longer period.

Goa
Goa CM Pramod Sawant announced slashing VAT by Rs 7 on both petrol and diesel in the state, while expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving relief to the common man.

Gujarat
Gujarat announced on Thursday the implementation of the Centre's decision and reduced prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 7 per litre.

Karnataka
Karnataka is going to reduce VAT on both petrol and diesel prices by Rs 7 per litre from today, as per CM Basavaraj Bommai.

Manipur
Manipur on Wednesday announced a reduction of Rs 7 on both petrol and diesel with immediate effect. Manipur CM N Biren Singh welcomed the Centre's decision to reduce excise duty.

Sikkim
Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang on Thursday announced a reduction in taxes on petrol and diesel by Rs 7 per litre. Petrol would now be cheaper by Rs 12 per litre and diesel by Rs 17 per litre in the state.

Tripura
Tripura govt announced that petrol and diesel will be cheaper by Rs 12 and Rs 17, respectively, per litre from today as the state provided a further relief of Rs 7 per litre.

Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday said his government has decided to give the extra relief of Rs 2 per litre on petrol, which in addition to the Rs 5 per litre relief provided by the Centre makes petrol cheaper by Rs 7 per litre in the state.

Uttar Pradesh
The Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday said that the prices of diesel and petrol in the state will be reduced by Rs 12 per litre each.
