The elevators will be fitted with Ascending Car Overspeed Protection, a system designed to stop the car in case of upward overspeed due to control failure. They will also be equipped with speed governors. These upgrades are part of the new lift code mandated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
All elevator manufacturers must comply with the new standards by December 22, 2025. The changes will also improve safety in states that currently do not have laws for installation and operation of elevators and escalators. At present, 17 states have such rules in place.
The revised code, IS 17900 Part 1 & 2, is aligned with European standards EN 81-20/50. It introduces stricter requirements for structural integrity, door systems, emergency communication, and inclusive design.
The standards mandate protective technologies such as light curtains and fail-safe door locking mechanisms. Elevators will also require two-way communication systems that function during power cuts and support fire safety and evacuation procedures.
Apart from passenger safety, the new standards also address the safety of technicians involved in lift maintenance, ensuring a comprehensive approach to elevator safety in the country.
