Fresh firing in Manipur’s Kangpokpi leaves one injured, houses set ablaze

In a fresh attack on IT Road in Manipur's Kangpokpi district, one person was injured.

A senior police official said armed men allegedly attacked villages inhabited by the Liangmei Naga community and opened fire.

According to the Makui Village Authority, armed men allegedly attacked Pipuram Naga Village at around 4 am, opening fire before subsequently setting houses ablaze. The attackers then allegedly moved towards the main Makui Naga Village, where firing continued, the village authority said in a statement issued on Tuesday. One person sustained injuries in the incident.


On Monday, three villagers were killed and two others, including a woman, sustained bullet injuries after armed assailants allegedly attacked N Teikhang Kuki village in Kangpokpi district.

The Makui Village Authority described the attack on Pipuram and Makui villages by militants as an attempt to drive Liangmei Nagas out of the IT Road area and take control of what it termed their ancestral land.

Census row

Normal life was disrupted across the five districts of Imphal Valley on Tuesday following a 24-hour statewide general strike called by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD).

The Union government on Monday deferred Census operations in Manipur. The JFD is demanding an NRC before the Census.

Women supporters took to the streets to enforce the shutdown. Public transportation was severely affected, while schools remained closed and government offices recorded poor attendance.

The Centre's decision to defer Census operations in Manipur came after a high-level review meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Monday.

The meeting was attended by Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and other senior officials.

Separately, the High Court of Manipur has directed that the Census process in the state remain deferred until further orders. A special bench comprising Chief Justice M Sundar and Justice A Guneswar Sharma passed the order while hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by the Kangleipak Students' Association and a separate writ petition filed by Shanta Nahakpam, leader of 14 Valley-based civil society organisations.

The next hearing before the special bench has been scheduled for October 12, 2026.
