Abonmai, is the former president of Zeliangrong Baudi, a tribal-based local council in Tamenglong district and a leader of the Naga People's Front (NPF).
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh tweeted,” Fourteen Myanmar nationals trying to board a flight to Delhi with fake Aadhaar cards were arrested at Imphal airport today. The state govt. takes this matter very seriously. Stringent actions will be taken up against those people who enter the country without proper documents”.

According to the police officials, the tribal leader was reportedly abducted while he was on his way to attend the Chief Minister's programme.


Unidentified miscreants abducted and gunned down Athuan Abonmai. The government has suspended 16 policemen following the incident. The bullet ridden body was found later. Abonmai was abducted from Tamenglong.

Manipur Director General of Police L.M Khaute has constituted a high level committee headed by Radhashyam Singh, Inspector General of Police (Intelligence).
