Four land in soup for waving Palestine flag during World Cup match at Eden Gardens

The protesters, in their mid-twenties, did not shout any slogans but were reportedly expressing their opposition to the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza by choosing the international cricket match as the platform for their demonstration.

Four persons were briefly held at the Maidan police station in Kolkata for waving the Palestinian flag during the Pakistan-Bangladesh World Cup cricket match at the Eden Gardens on October 31, police said.

After some questioning, all four individuals, residents of Bally, Ekbalpore, and Karaya PS areas, were let go, they added.

They four people had waived the Palestinian flag near Gate 6 and Block G1 at the stadium during the match.


"We had detained them for waving the Palestinian flag near Gate 6 and Block G1," an IPS officer told news agency PTI.

"Policemen posted at Eden Gardens initially could not understand what the protesters were up to. Then they waved the Palestine flag before being detained. They, however, did not raise any slogan," he added.
