Former West Bengal DGP Virendra appointed as the new State Information Commissioner (SIC)

Former West Bengal DGP Virendra has been appointed as the new State Information Commissioner (SIC) even as Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari boycotted the meeting and wrote to Governor CV Ananda Bose.

State Parliamentary Affairs minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay told mediapersons about Virendra's appointment, after the meeting. The meeting to select the new SIC was held at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's chamber in the presence of Chattopadhyay, Banerjee, Home Secretary B P Gopalika. Adhikari was also invited to the meeting.

However, BJP LoP skipped the meeting claiming about the violation of the "advertising guidelines for inviting applications".


"There were 15 applications for the post and among them 10 were found valid. The CM proposed Virendra's name and we supported it. Virendra has been appointed as the new state information commissioner," Chattopadhyay said after the meeting.

Talking about Virendra's appointment, Adhikari said, "The meeting is illegal. The Governor did not sign. I hope the Governor will not sign the appointment of the Information Commissioner this time also. All India level advertisement is required for this recruitment. We have written to the Governor and have sent the necessary documents."
