Former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh arrested over RG Kar doctor’s 'hurried cremation'

Former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh was arrested in Odisha on Thursday over his alleged involvement in the hurried cremation of the doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in 2024, police said.

Ghosh, the former MLA from Panihati, was arrested on charges including destruction of evidence, criminal conspiracy and forcing a person to carry out an act against their will, according to the police.

The arrest followed a fresh complaint filed by the victim doctor’s father at Khardaha police station on Monday. In his complaint, the father alleged that Ghosh was among three people who forced the family to carry out the cremation of his daughter’s body in haste.


The alleged hurried cremation has emerged as a fresh line of investigation in the high-profile RG Kar rape-murder case, which sparked widespread protests across West Bengal and the country.

The development came after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, while attending a memorial programme for the victim doctor in Panihati on Sunday, directed the Barrackpore Police Commissioner to conduct a fresh probe into the alleged hasty cremation.

The investigation is now focused on the circumstances surrounding the cremation and the alleged role of those involved.
