Rupani was a passenger on Air India flight AI171, which was heading to London’s Gatwick Airport. The flight crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad around 1:38 pm.
Rupani was a well-known political figure and served as the 16th Chief Minister of Gujarat from August 2016 to September 2021.
BJP MP Sambit Patra shared a message on X (formerly Twitter), saying, "The news of the tragic demise of former Chief Minister of Gujarat and senior member of the BJP family, Vijay Rupani ji, in the unfortunate plane crash in Ahmedabad is extremely painful and heart-wrenching. His departure is an irreparable loss not only for Gujarat but for the entire Indian politics."

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner had 242 people on board, including 230 passengers, two pilots, and ten crew members. It was heavily fueled for the long international flight, which may have made the fire worse after the crash.
