The government on Monday appointed former Commerce Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NITI Aayog.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Subrahmanyam appointment for a period of two years from the date of assumption of the charge of the post, a Personnel Ministry statement said.

Subrahmanyam will replace Parameswaran Iyer, who was appointed the CEO of the government think tank in June last year.

Iyer will now take over as the Executive Director of World Bank for a period of three years. He will be replacing Rajesh Khullar, a 1988 batch IAS officer, who has been repatriated to his cadre state Haryana, the order further said.

A 1988 batch IAS officer, Subrahmanyam served as the chief secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir when the State was bifurcated into two Union Territories in 2019 before being moved to the Ministry of commerce as secretary in 2021. A seasoned IAS officer, he has also worked in Manmohan Singh Prime Minister’s Office as Joint Secretary.

In September 2022, just days ahead of his retirement, the government appointed Subrahmanyam as the chairman and managing director of India Trade Promotion Organization on contract basis for a period of two years.
