FM Nirmala Sitharaman underlines steps taken on enhancing ease of biz, raising IBC staff strength

In reply to questions in Parliament ahead of the Budget session, Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman touched upon the various steps taken by the government to enhance ease of doing business in the country.

"A lot of steps have been taken on Ease of Doing Business. Nearly 11 steps have been mentioned in the reply, but most importantly Decriminalisation of 63 offences and as a result of which companies today are able to carry on their functions without the worry of compliance," the Finance minister said.

A central processing system has also been set up, she added.


FM Sitharaman informed the Parliament that the issue of NCLT and NCLAT appointments were being taken up seriously and would be done speedily.

In response to a question in this regard by Shashi Tharoor, the Finance minister said that efforts were on for staffing NCLT and NCLAT adequately.

The Congress MP had raised questions on the lack of sufficient strength in bankruptcy tribunals, especially in the Southern states.

The govt is working with the Supreme Court to get right members to appoint them in various tribunals, she added. There is only one NCLAT which is in Chennai, she acknowledged, adding that there was a need to have a greater number of Appellate Tribunals.

Sitharaman also appeared to rib Tharoor by remarking that the Congress MP needed to learn to differentiate between a typical laundry list, and the list of reforms undertaken by the Modi govt over time.
