Five sentenced to life imprisonment for 2012 ethnic conflict in Bodoland Territorial Region

BTAD is now Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). The convicted include Jainuddin Sheikh, Abdul Khaleque, Nabi Hussain, Habijur Ali, and Osman Ali.
As per FIR dated 23-07-2012 of informant S.I Albert L. Riengsete is that on 22-07-2012 at about 5:30 PM while executing patrolling duty along with his staff received information that three persons from Bodo community from Hasraubari were assaulted by unknown miscreants with sharp weapon on the road near Hasraubari village and they were taken to Bhetagaon hospital from where they were referred to Bongaigaon Civil Hospital for better treatment. Out of the three persons one Ratneswar Basumatary succumbed to his injuries at Bongaigaon Hospital.
One of the reasons for the riot was this killing later resulting in the death of several people.The Assam government handed over the investigation of the case to the CBI.
The court stated, “Situated thus, and having due regard to the evidence on record, statement of the accused persons and considering the facts and circumstances of the case and heinousness of the offence accused persons are convicted and sentenced to undergo Rigorous imprisonment for 3 years each u/s 148/324/149 IPC and are also convicted and sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for life and a fine of Rs. 15,000, i/d Rigorous imprisonment for a period of one year U/s 302/149 of IPC. All the sentences shall run concurrently.”
