New Delhi: Nearly half a dozen bar associations of various high courts have issued a joint statement, urging Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna to order a criminal investigation against Justice Yashwant Varma.

The associations have requested the CJI to withdraw the recommendation to transfer Justice Varma to his parent Allahabad High Court.

In a joint statement, the presidents of the bar associations of high courts of Delhi, Allahabad, Kerala, Karnataka and Gujarat have said: "The bar associations place on record its appreciation of the steps taken by the Chief Justice of India to embrace transparency and to make public the report of the chief justice of High Court of Delhi and other material on the website of the Supreme Court of India."

"The bar associations request the Chief Justice (of India) and the collegium to withdraw the transfer of justice Yashwant Varma and to withdraw all administrative work in addition to the judicial work which is already withdrawn...and to set the criminal law in motion as is applicable to any government servant... Had the criminal law been set in motion, the evidence would not have been destroyed," the associations said.
