First woman medical officer in Siachen: Meet Capt. Geetika Koul

Captain Geetika Koul has become the first woman medical officer in the Indian Army to be deployed at Siachen. The Fire and Fury Corps made the announcement on Tuesday. Siachen is the highest battlefield in the world.

This significant accomplishment follows Captain Koul's triumphant completion of the rigorous induction training programme at the esteemed Siachen Battle School. This demanding training, which is well-known for testing one's physical and mental endurance, covers a wide range of topics, such as high-altitude climbing, survival skills, and essential specialised medical procedures required to operate in harsh environments.

The Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army announced this milestone on social media, highlighting the significance of Captain Koul's deployment in promoting gender inclusion within the military. "Captain Geetika Koul from the Snow Leopard Brigade becomes the first woman medical officer of the Indian Army to be deployed at the world's highest battlefield, Siachen after successfully completing the induction training at Siachen Battle School," Fire and Fury Corps said in a post on X.

The northern Himalayan region of Siachen presents difficulties because of its strategic significance, severe weather, and difficult terrain. It is the longest glacier in the Karakoram and the second longest in non-polar regions of the world, measuring 76 km. Being a hub between Aksai Chin, Karakoram Pass, and Shaksgam Valley, it assumes strategic significance for China, Pakistan, and India.

The deployment of Captain Geetika Koul as the first female medical officer on this harsh battlefield marks a significant advancement in the Indian Army's efforts to integrate women.
