Quad FMs to meet this week in Atlanta; critical tech, minerals, supply chains on priority list

NEW DELHI: Plans are underway to organise the first Quad leaders' meeting under the current Trump administration, to be held on the margins of the Asean and East Asia summits in mid-November.

The proposed meeting will bring US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi together with the Japanese and Australian prime ministers. It will mark the first time these leaders share the Quad platform since President Trump's reelection.

The Asean and East Asia summits are scheduled to take place in Manila from November 15-18.

The proposed summit will focus on critical technology, minerals and associated supply chains, maritime security and disaster management, according to people familiar with Quad dynamics. The meeting is also expected to address the establishment of a Quad energy bank. A key item on the agenda will be securing supply chains for essential products, particularly in the light of ongoing conflicts and the weaponisation of trade routes.

In preparation for the event, Quad foreign ministers are due to meet this Friday and Saturday on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta, the US, to finalise next month's summit agenda. Although the four nations' foreign ministers have continued to meet regularly, a full summit under the second Trump administration had previously proved elusive. The last Quad summit took place in the US in 2024 during the Biden presidency.

The Quad summit is being proposed ahead of Trump's trip to China for the Apec summit and a proposed trilateral among the presidents of the US, Russia and China. The two back-to-back summits will contribute to geopolitical stability, said the people cited earlier. After the Quad summit, India and Japan will hold their fourth "two plus two" meeting at the level of foreign and defence ministers in Tokyo.
