The Supreme Court has directed the Centre and state governments to file their responses within four weeks on a plea seeking enforcement of fundamental duties of citizens.

The court made it clear that if the Centre and state governments (which have not filed their affidavits yet) fail to file responses within four weeks, the court will impose a cost of ₹25,000.

As per available information, UP and Karnataka have filed their responses. The plea filed by Durga Dutt, an SC lawyer, seeks enforcement of fundamental duties of citizens, including patriotism and unity of the nation, through comprehensive and well-defined laws.


Referring to Bhagavad Gita, the petitioner submitted that the need of the hour was to remind citizens that fundamental duties were as important as fundamental rights under the Constitution.
