The Centre on Tuesday apprised the Supreme Court that it is in the process of constituting an expert committee to examine whether death by hanging is the most suitable and painless method for death penalty.

This was submitted by attorney general R Venkataramani before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. The country's top law officer further told the bench that names of experts are being gathered for the committee.

The development took place during the resumed hearing of a petition seeking to do away with death by hanging and adopt methods, namely lethal injection or electrocution, which are relatively less painful.

The petitioner has placed reliance upon a report by the Law Commission, which said many countries have abolished death by hanging.
