A plea in the Supreme Court has sought contempt of court proceedings against Haryana Chief Secretary and DGP for 'failure' to settle the law and order problem in Gurugram over Friday prayers. The contempt plea against Chief Secretary Sanjeev Kaushal and DGP PK Agrawal cited a July 17, 2018, SC order which asked the executive to check communal incidents that could translate into hate crimes.

The plea alleged that the state was not acting against those disrupting Friday prayers as part of a conspiracy despite repeated complaints by affected members of the Muslim community. The state machinery must act on time to prevent unruly elements from taking law into their hands, it said. A 'fringe group with no local support' cannot be allowed to hold others to ransom, it said.

Suspected right-wing groups have stirred up sentiments against namaaz in public spaces in recent months and the situation has been simmering for long. Petitioner Mohammad Adeeb, a former Rajya Sabha MP, drew the court's attention to the administrative failure to contain 'hate being fomented' by right-wing groups and wanted the court to haul up erring officers.
