Ex-RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das appointed Principal Secretary-2 to PM Modi

Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das on Saturday was appointed as the second Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri Shaktikanta Das, IAS (Retired), as Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister with effect from the date he assumes the office. His appointment will be co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders, whichever is earlier," the order read.

PK Mishra, a retired IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre, is currently serving as the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister.


According to an official order, the tenure of Das, a retired IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, will be "co-terminus" with the term of the prime minister or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Das has been a career civil servant with over 42 years of distinguished service, primarily in the areas of finance, taxation, investment and infrastructure.

Das, who served as the RBI Governor from 2018 to 2023, played a pivotal role in navigating India through critical financial challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic and the country’s subsequent economic recovery. His tenure at the RBI was marked by decisive monetary policies and effective crisis management, earning him widespread acclaim within both government circles and the financial sector.

The appointment comes at a time when the Indian government is focusing on strengthening its economic policies and financial governance. As Principal Secretary-2, Das will be instrumental in providing strategic advice on key economic and financial matters, further enhancing the government's decision-making framework.
