The incident occurred around 9:30 PM near the Nana Peth area of Pune, where Andekar was standing with his cousin.
According to Ranjan Kumar Sharma, Joint Commissioner of Police, Pune, a group of unidentified assailants launched a violent attack on Andekar and his cousin. "During the attack, five rounds were fired, and they were also assaulted with long-blade sickles," Sharma stated.
Initial reports suggest that Andekar succumbed to injuries inflicted by a sharp weapon during the attack. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities focused on uncovering the details behind this brutal crime.
The crime has sent shockwaves through the city, prompting the immediate involvement of Pune's crime branch and other police teams. As per local media reports, three people have been detained so far namely Ganesh Komkar, Somnath Sayaji Gaikwad and Tushar Aba Kadam.
The reports have further stated Ganesh Komkar is being identified as the son-in-law of notorious gangster Bandu alias Suryakant Andekar.
"They (the crime branch) are engaged in finding the accused and arresting them. Till now it is not clear who are the accused and why they attacked them. Some known people whose names have appeared in this are being questioned," Sharma added.
The former Pune Corporator's body has since been taken to Sassoon Hospital for a postmortem.
