Every MP should stand united on Viksit Bharat, national security: President Droupadi Murmu

In her address to the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament at the start of the budget session, President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday underscored that MPs of all persuasions should stand united on issues of Viksit Bharat, national security, self-reliance and national unity as these are subjects which are beyond all differences. She underlined that India’s march towards becoming a developed nation is not limited to one government or a generation but is a continuous process.

The nearly hour-long address touched upon the impact of various welfare schemes of the Narendra Modi dispensation on the lives of crores of people. Her speech was applauded by the NDA members while there were some protesting voices from the Opposition when she mentioned the VB-G Ram G Act, 2025. “Amid different opinions and diverse viewpoints, there has been unanimity about nothing being greater than the nation. Venerable Mahatma Gandhi, Nehruji, Babasaheb, Sardar Patel, JPji, Lohiaji, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, Atalji — all shared the belief that differences of opinion on issues are natural in democracy, but there are certain subjects which are beyond all differences. The resolve of Viksit Bharat, the security of India, Atmanirbharata, the campaign for Swadeshi, efforts toward national unity, Swachhata, and on all such matters concerning the nation, the parliamentarians must stand united,” President Murmu said.

Describing this as the “spirit of our Constitution”, she urged every MP to take a unified stand on issues of national interest “as participants in the nation’s development” and infuse new energy into India’s progress.

A special mention of Viksit Bharat

She made a special reference to Viksit Bharat, the goal set by the Modi government to make India a developed nation by 2047 when it completes the centenary of its independence. “Today, all citizens can see that India stands at an important stage in its journey towards the future. The impact of the decisions being taken today will be seen in the years to come… The goal of Viksit Bharat is not limited to any one government or one generation. It is a continuous journey. In this journey, the efforts, discipline, and continuity of all of us are important. In the times to come, the nation’s progress will be shaped by its collective determination,” Murmu said.

She expressed confidence that Parliament, government as well as the citizens will work in tandem to achieve this goal. “Citizens of India will move forward, according supreme importance to national interest and upholding constitutional values. I am confident that all citizens will discharge their duties in national interest and for the welfare of the country,” she said.

President Murmu mentioned the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the national song 'Vande Mataram'. She also referred to the achievements of the Modi government like construction of four crore pucca houses for the poor in the last decade, tap water supply to 12.5 crore homes, LPG connections to 10 crore households and direct benefit transfers worth Rs 6.75 lakh crore.

She also appreciated the role of entrepreneurs, farmers, workers in the health and education sectors, FDI of $750 billion in the last 11 years, and growing self-reliance in the defence sector. “Today, my government is moving forward on the path of ‘Reforms Express’. Old rules and provisions are being updated continuously according to future needs,” she said, naming GST, Income Tax and labour code reforms, among others.

Referring to Operation Sindoor, she said, “The world has witnessed the valour and prowess of the Indian defence forces during Operation Sindoor. Using its own resources, our country destroyed the base camps of terrorists. My government sent a strong message that any terrorist attack on India will receive a firm and decisive response.

She also praised the fight against Maoist terror, saying only three districts remain affected by it, down from 126 earlier.
