Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the evacuation of students stranded in Ukraine had been possible due to "India's growing influence in the world".

"We successfully managed Covid. Now, We are evacuating thousands of Indians safely from the war zone in Ukraine through Operation Ganga," Modi said while speaking at the golden jubilee programme of the Symbiosis University in Pune.

The prime minister claimed while "several big countries are facing difficulty in evacuating their citizens... it is the growing influence of India that we have brought thousands of students back to our homeland".

Earlier in the day, the prime minister inaugurated a metro project in Pune city and took a 10-minute ride on the train after buying a ticket from a kiosk.
