People are spending more on non-vegetarian food as its share in total consumption expenditure rose in the last decade, according to an analysis of National Account Statistics 2025 released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation last week.

The share of services in total expenditure also rose, with spending on health increasing at a faster rate than on essential items like food and clothing.

Overall private final consumption expenditure (PFCE) grew at an average annual rate of 5.9% over the last decade, reaching Rs 99.1 trillion* in 2023-24. ET takes a look:
