Elderly woman mauled to death by her own pet German Shepherd in Kanpur, family still requests KMC to return the dog

A 90-year-old woman died after being attacked by her pet German Shepherd in Rawatpur, police said on Wednesday. The incident occurred last Friday but came to light after the dog's owner submitted a request to Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) for permission to hand over the animal to the family, a PTI report stated.

Dog attack leads to fatal injuries

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), Arti Singh, confirmed that Mohini Trivedi was attacked by the German Shepherd at her residence. "We have not received any written complaint on this matter till now," she said. However, she directed her subordinates to investigate and submit a fact-finding report.

Mohini Trivedi suffered multiple bites on her head, face, stomach, and hands. She was taken to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Sequence of events

According to police, the incident occurred when Mohini Trivedi went to the courtyard for some work. The dog started barking at her, and she hit it with a stick. This provoked the dog, which then attacked her.

Her grandson, Dheer Prashant Trivedi, and daughter-in-law, Kiran Trivedi, were present in the house but could not intervene as both had leg fractures.

Action taken by authorities

Upon being informed, police and a KMC team arrived at the scene and took the dog to the veterinary department.

KMC's chief veterinary officer, R K Niranjan, stated, "Dheer Prashant has submitted a written request to the department to hand over his dog." A final decision on whether to return the dog will be made after a thorough examination.

The investigation is ongoing, and further steps will be determined based on findings.
