Parliamentarians belonging to CPM, CPI and Congress were attacked and their vehicles vandalised in Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Friday by suspected BJP workers. The eight-member team was in the state to assess incidents of political violence after elections.

Those attacked included Lok Sabha members A Rahim and Abdul Khalique and Rajya Sabha MPs Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, Vinay Viswom, Elaram Karim. They said they were surrounded by miscreants and their vehicle pelted with stones. Tripura has witnessed a series of post-poll violence incidents.

The team was expected to stay in the state till Sunday, after which a report was to be prepared and the issue raised in Parliament that reconvenes on Monday after recess. The delegation had split into three teams for visiting the affected districts of West Tripura, Sepahijala and Khowai.


As many as 1,200 incidents of violence were reported in the state since the announcement of assembly election results on March 2, according to one of the leaders. Incidentally, when similar violence broke out in West Bengal, the Calcutta HC and Centre had sought immediate action from the state government. “The exact number of injured and extent of damage could not be ascertained,” CPM leader Pabitra Kar said.’’
