Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday conveyed Eid and Nowruz greetings to Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian, expressing hope for peace, stability and prosperity in West Asia, while condemning attacks on critical infrastructure that disrupt global supply chains.

In a telephonic conversation with the Iranian leader, Modi-without naming any country-flagged such attacks as a threat to regional stability and underscored the need to safeguard freedom of navigation and keep shipping lanes open and secure.

Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz, a key energy shipping route for India. Following sustained diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Tehran, Indian-flagged tankers are being allowed passage through the strait. On one occasion, an Iranian Navy escort was reportedly provided to an Indian vessel.

"Spoke with President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian and conveyed Eid and Nowruz greetings. We expressed hope that this festive season brings peace, stability and prosperity to West Asia," the Prime Minister said in a post on X. "Condemned attacks on critical infrastructure in the region, which threaten regional stability and disrupt global supply chains," he added.

Modi also appreciated Iran's continued support in ensuring the safety and security of Indian nationals in the country.

This was the second conversation between the two leaders since the current conflict began on February 28. On March 12, Pezeshkian had briefed Modi on the situation in Iran and shared his perspective on regional developments.

Pezeshkian proposed a regional security framework comprising West Asian countries to ensure peace and stability through cooperation without external interference. Referring to India's rotating BRICS presidency, he urged the grouping to play an independent role in halting aggression against Iran and safeguarding regional and global stability.
