ED’s Rajeshwar Singh likely to join BJP in a few weeks

Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer Rajeshwar Singh is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a few weeks, ET has learnt.

Singh, originally an encounter specialist with Uttar Pradesh police, who joined the ED in 2009 on deputation, has handled important cases including the 2G spectrum allocation scam and cases arising out of it, including the Aircel-Maxis deal.

Through 2010 to 2018, Singh also handled the Commonwealth Games scam and the irregularities in coal allocation, which rocked the UPA, Agusta Westland helicopter deal and played a significant role in aiding the investigation and action against former Union minister P. Chidambaram and Karti Chidambaram for their alleged involvement in corruption.


He was also part of the investigations into corruption cases that led to action against CMs OP Chautala, Madhu Koda and Jagan Mohan Reddy.

He was protected by the Supreme Court in 2014 and was absorbed in ED, at the direction of the apex court, for his handling of politically sensitive cases of money laundering. Singh has an engineering degree from the Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad and additional degrees in law and human rights.

After a period of long leave, Singh is now posted in the ED’s Lucknow office and has 12 years of service left. The government had initiated an investigation against him in 2018, but the enquiry had not revealed anything of significance.
