Manipur experienced two consecutive earthquakes on Wednesday, causing tremors across the Northeast, officials confirmed.

The first earthquake, measuring 5.7 magnitude, struck at 11:06 am. Its epicentre was located 44 km east of Yairipok in Imphal East district, at a depth of 110 km, according to the Regional Seismological Centre in Shillong. The tremors were felt in Assam, Meghalaya, and other parts of the region.

A second earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.1, hit Kamjong district at 12:20 pm, at a depth of 66 km.

Several buildings in Manipur developed cracks following the tremors. Videos shared on social media showed damage at a school building in Wangjing Lamding, Thoubal district, where a relief camp for those affected by ethnic violence was being run.

"We are verifying reports of damage," an official in Imphal stated.

So far, no damage has been reported from other states in the region.
