Pre-earthquake: Essential emergency kit
Before an earthquake, it is important to always have a disaster emergency kit prepared. This kit should include the following items: a battery-operated torch with extra batteries, a battery-operated radio, a first aid kit with a manual, emergency food (dry items), and sealed water. Additionally, include candles and matches stored in a waterproof container, a knife, chlorine tablets or powdered water purifiers, a can opener, essential medicines, cash and credit cards, thick ropes and cords, and sturdy shoes.

What to do during an earthquake - If indoors
Stay as safe as possible during an earthquake, knowing that some earthquakes may be foreshocks, with a larger one to follow. Minimise movement by taking only a few steps to a nearby safe place and stay indoors until the shaking stops, ensuring it is safe to exit.
If indoors, drop to the ground, take cover under sturdy furniture, and hold on until the shaking stops. If no furniture is nearby, protect your head with your arms and crouch in a corner. Stay away from windows, doors, and anything that could fall. If in bed, protect your head with a pillow, unless under a falling light fixture—then move to a safe place. Only use a doorway for shelter if it's nearby and strong. Stay inside until the shaking stops and avoid moving or exiting, as most injuries happen then. Be aware that electricity may go out, and alarms or sprinklers may activate.

If outdoors
Do not move from your location, but move away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and utility wires. Stay in an open area until the shaking stops. The greatest danger exists near buildings, at exits, and beside exterior walls. Most earthquake-related injuries happen from falling debris, flying glass, and collapsing walls.

If in a moving vehicle
Stop the vehicle quickly when it is safe to do so and remain inside. Avoid stopping near buildings, trees, overpasses, or utility wires. After the shaking stops, proceed cautiously, avoiding roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged.

If trapped under debris
Do not light a match, move around, or kick up dust. Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing to reduce inhalation of harmful particles. Tap on a pipe or wall to alert rescuers of your location. Use a whistle if available and only shout as a last resort to avoid inhaling dangerous dust.
