Kolkata: Two more persons were arrested on Monday in connection with the alleged gangrape of a 23-year-old medical student in West Bengal's Durgapur, taking the total number of arrests to five, the police said.

A Durgapur court remanded the two men to police custody for nine days. Three other accused were on Sunday remanded to 10-day police custody.

Senior Trinamool MP Saugata Roy said: "Such cases are rare in Bengal. Women's safety in Bengal is better than any other place. But women shouldn't leave their colleges so late at night as the police can't patrol everywhere. Police cannot be present on every road; police can take action after an incident occurs. So, women should also be cautious."

Hitting back, BJP's Amit Malviya said: "After Mamata Banerjee's regressive statement asking women to stay indoors, it is senior TMC MP Saugata Roy who parrots the same advisory, suggesting that police cannot be deployed everywhere."

The victim's father said, "I will take my daughter to Odisha as I am worried about her safety. By God's grace, she is alive. We will not send her here again." Chief minister Mamata Banerjee said stringent action will be taken against the perpetrators.
