Driving Licence May Remain Valid Until Holder Turns 50
At present, a driving licence is generally valid for 20 years. The road transport ministry is now examining a proposal to extend this validity period until the licence holder reaches the age of 50.According to officials familiar with the development, the move is aimed at simplifying procedures for citizens and reducing the paperwork associated with licence renewals. The proposal is part of a broader push to improve public services and make transport-related processes more convenient.
Vehicle Ownership Transfer Could Become Fully Online
The ministry is also working on another proposal that may allow vehicle ownership transfers and permit renewals to be completed entirely through digital platforms. If implemented, vehicle owners would no longer need to make repeated visits to RTOs for these services. The initiative is expected to streamline procedures and save time for both citizens and transport authorities.
Focus on Ease of Living
Officials indicated that both proposals are being developed with the objective of improving the everyday experience of citizens. The government believes that digital systems can help reduce administrative hurdles while ensuring services remain accessible. The ministry is reportedly working on the details and could introduce the changes in the near future.Revenue Concerns Unlikely to Affect Plan
Officials said state governments are unlikely to face any revenue loss if the proposals are implemented. Charges related to obtaining or renewing driving licences can continue to be collected through online systems without requiring applicants to visit transport offices."Second, once you have a system to give negative points to drivers for violations and link it to suspension or cancellation of their license, bad drivers will be reined in...," said an official.
