Thane: Nine people were safely rescued after a portion of a ceiling slab collapsed in a 24-year-old residential building in Maharashtra's Thane city on Sunday, officials said.

The incident occurred around 9 am at the four-storey Ganraj Society in the Vartak Nagar area, when the ceiling slab of a second-floor flat collapsed into the apartment below, trapping occupants, said Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Thane Municipal Corporation's Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC).

Swift rescue operations were launched by the fire brigade, disaster management cell, the Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF), and local police, he said.

All nine trapped residents, including an elderly couple, were brought out unhurt, he added.
