A diplomatic crisis between India and Nepal may have been avoided for now over the fiasco involving the reputed Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), but the episode has left a bad taste.

KIIT issued a public apology and removed two officers from service for making "extremely irresponsible" statements following the suicide of a Nepali student in her hostel room. Nepal's envoy met KIIT representatives and spoke with the institute's promoter. The Nepalese PM, in a statement on Facebook and X, alleged the forced eviction of Nepali students and called for India's intervention. The Nepalese Embassy in New Delhi dispatched officers to counsel affected students and ensure their safety. After strong backlash and diplomatic pressure, the Odisha government intervened. The Centre is closely monitoring the situation.

KIIT, a premier Odisha-based institution, has been under scrutiny since protests erupted over the student's death. The controversy escalated when KIIT was accused of evicting a group of Nepali students. A viral video showing staff members engaging in a heated exchange with Nepali students further intensified the situation.

Several social media videos also showed security personnel and university staff allegedly abusing and using force against students demanding justice.

"KIIT has always been a home to students from across the world, fostering a culture of inclusivity, respect, and care. We deeply regret the recent incident and reaffirm our commitment to the safety, dignity, and well-being of all our students, including our dear Nepali students," the institute said in a post on X.
