As the new vaccination strategy rolled out from Monday, a record 88 lakh doses were administered, the highest so far in a single day anywhere in the world.
"What happened yesterday (Monday) was not sudden but a result of coordinated planning. Between June 1-21, the average daily vaccination was 34,62,841, so a jump to 88 lakh when vaccines and capacity are available is possible," said health secretary Rajesh Bhushan on Tuesday.
Nearly 64% of the jabs on June 21 were given in rural areas, Bhushan said on Tuesday.
NK Arora, head of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation in India (NTAGI), has said that 20-22 crore doses will be available from next month. The aim is to vaccinate at least one crore people every day, Arora told ET.
India reported 50,848 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours.
The cumulative recoveries reached 2,89,94,855, including 68,817 patients who were recovered in the last 24 hours.
With this, the active caseload went down further to 6,43,194, the lowest in 82 days.
The recovery rate improved to 96.56 per cent while the weekly positivity rate is currently at 3.12 per cent.
