New Delhi: Senior Indian Police Service officer Dinkar Gupta was appointed as the director general of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC), said a personnel ministry order.

Gupta is a 1987-batch IPS officer of the Punjab cadre. The ACC has approved his appointment till March 31, 2024, that is the date of his retirement, said the order.

Central Reserve Police Force director general DG Kuldiep Singh was handling the additional charge of DG NIA after the post fell vacant following retirement of 1984 batch officer YC Modi. Gupta has earlier served as the Punjab DG and has handled several anti-militancy operations in the border state.


In another order, Swagat Das was appointed special secretary (internal security) in the home ministry. Das, a 1987-batch IPS officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre, is currently special director in the Intelligence Bureau.

Das has been appointed to the post till November 30, 2024, that is the date of his superannuation, the order said.
