Dinesh Sharma takes oath as lieutenant governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Dinesh Sharma took the oath as the 14th lieutenant governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Tuesday.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted at Lok Niwas in Sri Vijaya Puram and Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sharma.

The Warrant of Appointment during the ceremony was read out by the Chief Secretary Gyanesh Bharti.


Senior bureaucrats, representatives of political parties and members of the business community had attended the event.

Sharma, a former professor of commerce at the University of Lucknow, had previously served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and mayor of Lucknow.

His portfolios whilst serving in the UP government included higher and secondary education, science and technology, and electronics and information technology.

The current governor was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh in 2023.

The BJP politician’s appointment as lieutenant governor of the Union Territory was announced by the Rashtrapati Bhavan on September 5.

Sharma’s predecessor, Admiral DK Joshi (retd), served as lieutenant governor of the Union Territory from October 8, 2017.
