The Supreme Court Thursday directed the Centre to devise an appropriate policy, in consultation with the National Council for Transgender Persons, so that transgender individuals seeking employment can be reasonably accommodated in all establishments covered by the provisions of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019.

The top court said the policy should be devised within three months. A bench comprising Justices DY Chandrachud and Hima Kohli also directed the Department of Personnel Training (DoPT), Central government and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to consult all stakeholders in the process of formulating the policy.

The development took place during the hearing of a plea by a transgender woman who was refused the post of cabin crew by Air India.
