Despite recent rains, Mumbai residents to face water cut from July 1

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) cited inadequate water level in reservoirs for its decision to implement 10% water cut in Mumbai from July 1. This year monsoon's entry into Mumbai has been two weeks late due to cyclone Biparjoy.

Despite the recent monsoon rains in Mumbai, city residents will face a 10% water supply cut. Reason: Inadequate water level in lakes supplying water to Mumbai due to delayed monsoon. Mumbai's civic body has Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also appealed to citizens to save water and use it judiciously.

City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra or CIDCO will impose a 15% cut in its supply areas, Times of India reported.

BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal told Press Trust of India that the civic body has decided to implement 10% water cut in Mumbai from July 1, as the stock in lakes supplying water to the city is about 7%. Mumbai gets 3,800 MLD (millions of litres per day) water from seven reservoirs located in Mumbai, Thane and Nashik districts: Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar and Tulsi..


According to a BMC report, the seven lakes had 7.26% stock at 6 am on Wednesday as compared to water 9.04% and 16.44% in 2022 and 2021 respectively.

In a rare occurrence, the monsoon on Sunday covered both Delhi and Mumbai together. But its entry into the financial capital was two weeks late. According to a India Meteorological Department official, cyclone Biparjoy had impacted the monsoon's progress over southern India and the adjoining western and central parts of the country.

"Since the cyclone system absorbed most of the moisture, the monsoon's progress along the west coast was slow," the official said.

The monsoon, the lifeblood of India's $3 trillion economy, delivers nearly 70% of the rain needed to water its farms and recharge reservoirs and aquifers. It also brings relief from the worst of the summer.

The weather department has however forecast enhanced rainfall activity in many parts of Maharashtra. "Due to active monsoon conditions enhanced rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at a
few places over parts of Konkan and adjoining ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra during next 3-4 days..
Enhancement in rainfall is also expected over parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha," IMD said in its weather forecast.
