Depression over Bay of Bengal: IMD warns of rainfall in Odisha, West Bengal in latest update

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said that a low pressure area over Southeast and adjoining Central Bay of Bengal has developed into a depression over Westcentral Bay of Bengal. The depression is currently centered approximately 590 km south of Paradip (Odisha), 740 km south of Digha (West Bengal), and 880 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh). Over the next 12 hours, it is expected to further intensify into a deep depression. The depression is projected to move northwestwards during the next 12 hours and then recurve, moving north-northeastwards over the three days towards the coasts of Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal.

The IMD forecasts light to moderate rainfall in the coastal districts of Odisha and West Bengal. On October 23rd, there is a likelihood of light to moderate rainfall at a few places in Odisha, and on October 24th and 25th, many places in Odisha are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall. Similarly, coastal areas of West Bengal may witness light to moderate rainfall on October 24th and 25th.

The depression has also led to the prevalence of squally winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph over the Westcentral Bay of Bengal. These winds are projected to gradually increase, becoming 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph from the evening of October 22nd until October 25th. Thereafter, the wind speed is expected to gradually decrease.


In the adjoining eastcentral and southeast Bay of Bengal, squally winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph are currently present near the system. These winds are likely to become 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph from the morning of October 22nd until October 23rd. Thereafter, they are expected to gradually decrease.

Further, in the North Bay of Bengal and along the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh, squally winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph are anticipated on October 23rd. These winds are likely to gradually increase, becoming gale wind speeds reaching 60-70 kmph, gusting to 80 kmph from October 24th to October 26th.

The IMD has advised fishermen to refrain from venturing into the Westcentral Bay of Bengal until October 25th, the adjoining eastcentral and southeast Bay of Bengal until October 23rd, and the North Bay of Bengal and along the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh from October 23rd to October 26th, due to the prevailing weather conditions.
