Depression forms in Bay of Bengal, to hit parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, IMD says

On Saturday, a well-marked low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is expected to cross the north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coasts between Vishakhapatnam and Gopalpur, near Kalingapatnam, around midnight.

The low-pressure system, which had been situated off the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts, moved west-northwestward and strengthened into a depression, the IMD reported.

"It is likely to move further west-northwestwards and cross north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha coasts between Vishakhapatnam and Gopalpur close to Kalingapatnam around midnight of today, the 31st August 2024," the IMD stated.


As a result, Odisha is expected to experience isolated very heavy rainfall during this period, with heavy rain potentially continuing on September 1. The IMD had previously warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning at isolated locations in southern Odisha districts including Gajapati, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, and Nabarangpur.

Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning may also occur in isolated spots in Nuapada, Kalahandi, Bolangir in the western region, and Kandhamal and Ganjam in the southern part of the state. The IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Bolangir, and Bargarh on Sunday.

Odisha's Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has advised all district collectors to stay prepared for any potential impacts of the depression.
